ESTABLISH THE LEWIS COUNTY OUTDOOR RECREATION AND TOURISM ADVISORY COMMISSION. THE PURPOSE OF THIS GROUP IS TO IDENTIFY CURRENT CHALLENGES AND FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES ASSOCIATED WITH RECREATION AND TOURISM IN LEWIS COUNTY AND TO POSITION COMMUNITIES TO MINIMIZE IMPACTS AND MAXIMIZE BENEFITS
WHEREAS, the Lewis County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) recognizes that outdoor recreation and tourism are vital assets to Lewis County and seeks to establish the Lewis County Outdoor Recreation and Tourism (LCORT) Advisory Commission under the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds/Discover Lewis County; and
WHEREAS, the LCORT Advisory Commission will bring representatives from local governments, public entities and private industry together to address growing concerns with the impact of outdoor recreation and tourism. Many Lewis County communities are not taking full advantage of the existing opportunities and lack the infrastructure to support both current and future activity. By consulting the appropriate stakeholders and similar organizations already in existence, this group aims to understand both the potential strain and benefits that outdoor recreation and tourism pose and generate recommendations via a Strategic Plan to the BOCC. The plan will consist of short- and long-term planning recommendations that focus on improving outdoor recreation and tourism experiences as well as those of the communities they affect; and
WHEREAS, the LCORT Advisory Commission will guide the Lewis County BOCC in creating a responsible, sustainable and profitable outdoor recreation and tourism industry that local communities will embrace; and
WHEREAS, membership on the Advisory Commission will be for staggered two-year terms and will include the following sectors for a total of seven (7) members: private citizens' interest, nonprofit interest, government interest, and a Lewis County Board of County Commissioner; and
WHEREAS, it is in the public's best interest to establish the Lewis County Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Advisory Commission.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners that the Lewis County Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Advisory Commission is established to make recommendations to the BOCC effective January 1, 2021.
