ESTABLISH THE LEWIS COUNTY SERVICE ANIMAL POLICY

Resolution Number: 24-206

WHEREAS, the Lewis County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) desires to establish a Service Animal Policy to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Washington State law regarding the presence of service or assistance animals in Lewis County facilities; and

WHEREAS, RCW 49.60.040(24) defines "service animal" as a dog or miniature horse and provides specific examples of work or tasks a service animal may be trained to perform, excluding comfort and emotional support; and

WHEREAS, this policy applies to all elected officials, employees, volunteers and visitors of Lewis County facilities unless otherwise governed by statute, county ordinance or policy; and

WHEREAS, this policy does not apply to animals at county facilities for official county purposes, such as K9s under the control of law enforcement officers, courthouse dogs approved by the court, or animals under the direct supervision of animal shelter-trained staff.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Lewis County BOCC establishes the Lewis County Service Animal Policy as attached and authorizes the County Manager to amend as necessary.

DONE IN OPEN SESSION this 25th day of June, 2024.
